Did you know that Darin (he sometimes plays w/ rory cloud) is in guppies now?
yes I did (re- Darin) and that is an excellent addition.
I know it's not always in the Guppie's style, but remember what you promised Candace :)
WHICH LEADS ME TO POINT 1:
the pure punk wall of sound only works in our environ for moments, picture an opera if you will.
we've got a wide ranging audience that will be in attendence and I want to turn them on to what you do, but we have to do it
in a way that doesn't send them on there way before their minds can get it.
Look at the material you are doing. The words are important components that sometimes get muddied in their articulation. Re-examine the tempos of the pieces and ask yourself this, "are we playing it so fast that people can't actually immerse themselves in the moment? " Modern American culture demands everything fast. Look at the way our movies are made.
Scenes are measured in miliseconds. The speed is so fast that rather than engage the mind of the viewer (or listener) your disengage the experience. It becomes numbing. And the mind just dissapears into itself.
I'd note that my generation is in part responsible for the younger generations 'need for speed'; however, this fact cannot be used a justification for polarizing the audience. Punk music seeks to say, FUCK YOU!; and to do so like a slap in the face. I do not disrespect that form of communication; but it is not the form of communication that is in line with the Violethour ethos.
I'd like for you both to have this conversation with your bandmates.
The Violethour is about reconnecting oneself with nature. The Violethour should be a sensuous experience. We want to make people think. We want to challenge people's ideas and definitions and perceptions of the world around them, but we want to do this is an embrace of what ultimately can only be described as love. The tempo, textures and volume levels of the performance all directly impact this experience.
Mangular and the Guppies are, like the Velvet Underground and the Doors, more than bands that play/make music. You are works of art unto yourselves.
AND NOW TO POINT 2
Except for Artwalk, all shows and events at the Violethour are now PRIVATE. To enter, you must become a FRIEND OF THE COLONY.
It does not cost anything to join. What it does is allow us to better manage the occupancy loads, the internal and street security, and our own liability.
Unfortunately, we can only allow people in that are 21+.

WHat this means of course is that we will likely NOT be letting people in that you want in only because they are either too lazy to register or don't think we're serious about not letting people in who haven't registered. You all need to be OK with this. Because, once we have a few events where people are turned away, things will change and people will sign up.We can only have about 50 people in the studio (this includes Staff and Performers). And yes, all of you band mates will need to be registered.
The point here is not make things complicated; but to recognize that this is a business venue and we need to treat it as such or it will just fail. The music and art created inside is not masturbation; but rather, of value to ALL - we thus need to honor that by dignifying the business aspect of this.
If we reinforce the above, we will likely get a high pre-registration turn out.
I know I may have stirred up a lot of questions and comments. I am happy to discuss. I am available all week sporadically. So email or call to set up an appointment.
Aside from perhaps the JAM SESSIONS and Odelia or john Frum (doing an acoustic show), I am not so interested in 'loud' bands playing at the Violethour; not because I personally may or may not like the music; but because, at this time, as we define for the public what the Violethour is, I want to make sure that my definition using image and words doesn't get clouded by performance that might send a mixed message of what we are about.
take care,
and I am very excited about Feb 25.
