Every opportunity should be cherished. Ladd pulls me aside right after George finishes a song he's 'lovingly' dedicated to me ... Your Cheaten' Heart. And of course, George is looking at Candace and I with that wicked mischeavious grin that I've come to love about George Carr.
"Mike", says Ladd, "We've got to set aside a night for George. We've got to honor him."
"I'm thinking the same thing", I say. "We need to set aside a show for you, Earl and George."
Ladd smiles. "I'd really like that", he says.
I'm looking at the pictures that I took last night. There's these sequences when you know it was good. When you know that what you were hearing was that cherished opportunity.
"People in town", I say, "just don't know what their missing."
"Who knows how long George'll be around", says Ladd.
"When he's gone, a piece of history will be gone too. Right now, right here, this is a connection to an America that is dissapearing."
But then I think that Ladd doesn't see how he and Terry fit into this as well.
Everything we said about George, and everything we say about Earl Allen, it all equally applies to Ladd and to Terry.
Their voices are also a piece of Fullerton history.
Every opportunity should be cherished.
Like I said, I am looking at these pictures and wishing I had a team of people that could be taking the finished pieces and then printing them and framing them and converting them into electronic files for posting on this blog. There's just not enough time in the day. Why did it take me so long to see this? Why did it take me this long?
And wait. Pause.
Larry. Larry is helping me with the music files. I make the worst recordings and he somehow gets something of use out of them. Larry helps me. Larry sees whats going on. Dawn sees what's going on. Phil sees. There are people in town that understand the importance of all of this, as well as the community being created as well as the pleasure of just being in the room.
It's Sunday Night and it's my night off and where do I want to be? The same place Alphabet Man wants to be. The same place Martha wants to be. Table Ten.
I know why Farrah likes working here. She's not being ogled. She's being appreciated. This place is not about what you can get from it, but rather, what you can contribute to it. That right there is what makes a family.
It's not about what you can take.
It's about what you can give.
"I'm such an idiot". I tell Larry. "I should have brought my recorder. I'm just pissed off at myself for not checking the levels on the People of Tomorrow show. It's all blown out."
"There's a sweet spot", says Larry, "in every room there's a sweet spot. You'll find it."
Thanks Larry.
You've given me a reason to think.
Every opportunity to really live life should be cherished. Every moment of every day is reason to celebrate.
Any one of us could be taken away.
I know when I go, there's going to be a paperwork trail for years. And I apologize right now to whomever is left with my desk and garage and studio and ...
hey, young and old reading this ... you're leaving your mark behind you wether you want to or not. Put some thought into that mark ...
think about the message your leaving behind you.
When Ladd plays the guitar and sings. The man must have been touched by the GREAT SPIRIT, he must be channeling something ... because, his voice is just so incredibly beautiful. It's haunting it's so beautiful. And there's this saddness in that voice. It's not a saddness that you don't want to feel. It's a saddness that makes you reveal
yourself
to the mirror you're always carrying with you.
Don't let life pass you by.
And don't forget to say hi to a passing stranger today and
wave at those you'd normally flip off
and forgive instead of forget and
maybe most important of all,
smile.
when you read this.
Smile.
